There are some benefits to this, but it feels strange to me, especially the fact that it's a "for-profit" business

I think most dogs would be confused with this. Dogs are essentially pack animals and they bond with their family members and think of them as their pack. A dog that's bounced around like that would need to be an exceptional animal, capable of bonding with a large, extended pack. Wouldn't work for my dogs, but it might be fine for some other breeds, esp. those normally used for service dogs. K ;o)

i knew of this project - dog shelter asked people who couldnt adopt a pet permanently just to borrow our dogs for a couple of hours, for the weekend or so. some money in exchange was welcomed but not required. result : happiness on both parts

renting a pet -why not? as long as the dog is not abused or spoiled by repeated fixation to different owners that rent it for longer time? well, then we have dogs for behavioral therapy - they take them to old peoples homes, to hospitals and so on to enable people cuddle them and socialize with them and feel better through it although they cannot keep them permanently. this is also some sort of renting out the pet. of course the pet must e able to 1. recognize its owner without confusion 2. get on well with strangers. (the article too refers to autistic children). but making big money ayou of this business seems strange to me

and how about renting horses for riding? or renting a stable for your horse

i think that it is a trap because you get so attached to them.
i personally am Very against the idea because i am a dog lover so i think that dogs deserve a good home and not be traded for money
