the Core brand refers to processors with the "mobile" derivative of 32-bit Intel P6 microarchitecture (preceding the Core microarchitecture), whereas the Intel Core 2 brand refers to CPUs with the 64-bit Core microarchitecture.

Core Duo is 32-bit only, and older. Core 2 Duo is 64-bit capable, and newer.

core duo = slower fsb, smaller cache, and only 32 bit
core 2 = faster fsb, larger cache, and 64 bit
