I am using Windows XP with the Securtiy Pack. Have switched out CD Roms and they both can power up and eject the disc, but will not read it. My computer does not show it there. All physical connections are correct, and the drive is set as slave. any ideas?

Is the drive sharing a cable ? If so check the other device IS set to master, cannot have 2 on same setting on same cable (unless you set both to cable select)

Did it work before ? If so did anything occur before it stopped working ?

Try going into device manager, see if any CDs show up there, if so DELETE them and reboot windows.

Also try right clicking "my computer" then manage, then local disk management, see if the CD shows there, if so might simply need a drive letter assigned, right click drive in lower list.

Also check on boot if the BIOS see's the drive, if not checkl BIOS/CMOS settings, make sure ALL IDE are set to auto, and of course double check all cable connections.

My best bet is that either:

1. You have the drive ribbon cable in upside-down. I've done it before; it's a *****.
2. If the drive is alone on the cable, it needs to be a Master. If the drive is a Slave on the cable, the other drive needs to be a Master.
3. Unlikely in XP, but common in older versions of Windows: there are no proper drivers available for the IDE controller, so it can't detect the CD-ROM drive. Check the Device Manager to see if they have proper drivers.

go to the device manager see if it is installed make sure it does not have any conflicts check your connections make sure that the data cable is not loose and seated in the mainboard also try swaping out the data cable also update your aspi device drivers and the drivers for the rom. check your jumper settings master/slave settings. Try to detect it with add an remove hardware if this does not work reload windows. XP sometimes has trouble detecting drives. Make sure the data cable is installed the right way the red stripe is pin #1 it should face toward the power connector on the drive.
