There are at least 100 things that will cause the check engine light to come on. No one here can tell why. You need to take it to a mechanic, not a parts store, and have the code retrieved and the problem repaired.

Only a mechanic can tell for sure. All it means is that the computer has reported an error, and the mechanic needs to connect his diagnostic computer to the car's computer to read the error message. I think these errors are often related to failed sensors that the computer uses to monitor and control the engine. I had the light came on in my 2000 Honda Civic and it was due to a failed top-dead-center sensor.

You may have a problem under the hood not necessary the engine, Have it checked and the codes read and that will tell you about where the problem is , Hey check the oil first and then go from there, hope this helps.

YOU SHOULD GET THE VEHICLES COMPUTER SCANNED AND CHECK FOR ANY PROBLEMS AS WELL AS CODES AND THEN YOU WILL HAVE A GOOD IDEA ON WHAT THE PROBLEM TRULY IS.
TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.
LEAVE IT THERE WITH THEM SO THAT THEY CAN FIND THE PROBLEM FOR YOU, IT WILL BE A LOT BETTER THAN JUST REPLACING PART AFTER PART AND NOT DOING ANY GOOD.

Anything from a falty sensor to the car not getting enough oxygen to a blown head gasket. You will need to go to a mechanic (or some auto parts stores) to have them read your car's computer to determine what the problem is.

i have a 2001 ford tauruas that does this to. Go to AutoZone and tell them you want your car electronics checked. They'll do it for free and should be able to tell you what it is and how to fix it. mine was a oxygen filter problem.

Just go to Jiffy Lube or whatever place you go to and they'll fix it. The light means "Check the engine, I think something's broken." In an idiot's way of words.
