I always took a spoonful or two of sugar - straight out of the bag - and just held it in my mouth until it dissolved.
It always worked for me.

Introduction
The cause and function of hiccups has baffled medical practitioners since the days of Hippocrates. Although no one has figured out the exact science behind these "abrupt diaphragmatic contractions," we have come up with a few home remedies that might be able to help.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Steps
1Step OneSwallow 1 tsp. white table sugar, dry. A study found that this stopped hiccups immediately in 19 out of 20 people. Repeat up to 3 more times at 2-minute intervals if necessary.
2Step TwoGulp down a glass of water if the sugar doesn't work.
3Step ThreeSlowly eat a piece of dry bread.
4Step FourBreathe in and out of a paper bag. Do not use a plastic bag under any circumstances, and don't do this longer than 1 minute.
5Step FiveGargle with water (see 'How to Gargle').
6Step SixRepeat the above steps until your hiccups stop.
Tips & Warnings
Keep in mind that hiccups can be caused by eating too fast and subsequently swallowing a lot of air.
Drinking too much alcohol can also be the cause.
See a doctor if you have severe pain, if your hiccups last longer than a day (or 3 hours in the case of a small child), or if they started after you took a prescription medication.

Hold your breath in for as long as you can ( no joke) if it doesn't work 1st time - try again and I promise, you will be hiccup free.

Hold your breath and your nose, tip your head back a little and drink a glass of water.... When they've gone, don't forget to start breathing again!

Hold your breath and stand or sit completely still, while counting to 25 s.l.o.w.l.y. Concentrate as hard as you can on the numbers. Works almost every time : )

Hold your breath and down a pint of water without stopping - makes you slosh but it's tried and tested, never been known to fail.
