At my last apointment, 24 weeks, my doctor told me that my baby probably weighed a pound and a half. Thats the first weight I remember being told.

They can guesstimate the best based on the routine ultrasound most doctors order at 16-20 weeks. Still, differences in diagnostic equipment, the skill of the technician, changes in amniotic fluid and other variables can throw off the numbers, sometimes dramatically. But the ultrasound is pretty much the most accurate tool they have for measuring prenatal weight. With my first pregnancy, I had to have a later ultrasound as well (at around 37 weeks) because my baby was so large. And they were right almost to the ounce (based on projected growth and his weight at birth). So they can be highly accurate. Congratulations and God Bless!

I am currently 38 weeks pregnant and am going through the baby weigh and size thing. All along I have measured 2 weeks ahead of my due date , and fundal height is one way Dr can tell babys size. My dr has ordered an ultrasound as well ,and from this they measure the babys head, chest circumferance, and leg length and supposedly get an pretty good guess , My Dr says it isnt 100% but a lot better then guessing . She says its with in a pound . Hope this helps

There are several ways to calculate fetal weight:
-Patient Estimation
-Clinical Estimation
-Ultrasound
None of them are accurate the ultrasounds are the least accurate.

CONCLUSION: Sonographic estimation of fetal weight offers no advantage over clinical or patient estimation of fetal weight at term.

usually at your 18-20 week ultrasound they check the formation, size, and sex of the baby.
Later in your pregnancy if they need to they will do other ultrasounds and use those and special mathimatical formulas to guess weight.
