I have always had ants but they have always stayed in just two places. One was by back door and the other was by a skirting board in my living room. They never wondered any where so I left them to it. However, they have now stared to crawl all over my house. I wentto buy ant powder yesterday and when I came home the floor of my living room was covered in not only ants but flying ones and all.
The powder worked, but today I have just been into the kitchen and there are flying ants every where . Up the walls and on the floor, it's creepy. I have put more powder down but I'm not hopefull that by tommorow they wont be back. Any advice as how to get this sorted? - thanks

Try ammonia outside your house. It works. /and try cleaning the inside of your house with it.DO NOT USE BLEACH WITH IT IT CAN KILL YOU IF USED TOGETHER. Maybe you already know that but just to be safe I said it. As I have said to other ? on here I fought ants for years and thats the only thing that worked.

This has worked for me several times. You have to ask the ants nicely to go and then tell them that if they are not gone in a week, you will start to use antkiller (Nippon is a good one as they take it back to the nest and it destroys all of them). I did this in my daughter's garden a few weeks ago and they had all gone before Flying Ant Day. On a few days of the year, some of the ants develop wings and fly off to make a new nest, it seems you've been unlucky and been caught on a Flying Ant Day. Asking them nicely to leave really can work and then you don't have to feel bad about killing them - either they will be gone and you won't need to kill them, or if you do, at least you know you gave them fair warning.

Cheap veggie oil sprayed around house foundation prevents crawlys crossing it and environmental safe.
Catch an ant & look throught magnifying glass at top side of ant toward its butt. If you see couple of yellow 'hairs', you have an infestation of carpenter ants that are in the walls & eating the wood same as termites would. This would be a big problem. Otherwise deal with as regular ants.

Flying ants will not be around for long. It is probably the first arrival of hot weather that has brought them out. The winged males exist only for mating and during the swarming season they take to the air with winged females who are the future Queens aand copulate. The winged males all die soon after mating. The females shed their wings after mating and look for a new site to build a brood chamber and begin new ant colony so you need to go for them before that happens.
So what you need to concentrate on is to get rid of wingless ants. In my experience the best stuff to buy , both to get rid of existing lot and prevent new colonies is stuff called "Nippon or else stuff called "Raid". If you use Nippon the ants will swarm on it and carry it back to the nest so let them do that, and the poison will do its stuff after they have carried it back killing the Queen and other ants. Raid kills them more quickly but will not get at the ones in the nest you can not readily get at.

Some of the ants grow wings in order to mate. ( i think this is the reason) You could try putting out something sweet in a bottle, like honey or jam ( or jelly if you are american) and they might fly into it and drown... now i hate to kill anything, and i loved the fact that you let the ants share your home, but you can't have them all over the place. I stayed in a hotel in France last week and got bitten to death off the little blighters. You could get enviromental health in to exterminate them. Good luck...
PS Witch hazel is great for the bites... you might need it!!!

Hi there. So sorry to hear about your problem - they're not nice things are they? You might have to think about calling someone out tomorrow if you're still having problems. In the meantime, keep putting the powder down periodically, even if there's nothing there. Make sure the powder goes into/by any cracks in the floor or gaps under the skirting boards. Have a can of Raid handy in case you see any strolling about any other times. Hope you get it sorted x

Go to a hardware store and buy a small bottle of TERRO. You place a small amount in a bottle cap or on a small piece of cardboard. Set them where you see the ants. They should be gone soon. It is a thick syrupy stuff. One bottle lasts for years. Good luck.
