Monologues are a dime a dozen, but the right one is tough. I can relate to your situation. A few years ago I played Tom Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie. There are several monologues in there that you could do. They are all directed to the audience so that's good. Also, the library has a lot of different books on monologues but I wouldn't recommend them unless you absolutely couldn't find anything else. The reason for that is because it's just one part of a whole play and it doesn't give you much to go on character wise. I would rather have a whole script to take a mono from, that way I can read the whole thing and have a better grasp for the character. That's just a personal opinion and preference, of course. I'm not saying that's what you should do. Also, there are a lot of my friends and fellow actors who have taken conversations from novels and put together their own monologues. Such conversations are hard to find, especially since you have to take out what the other person is saying and just do what your character is saying. Here's another idea you might like. I have read a lot of good funny stuff from The Onion Newspaper. You can go online and read their stuff. They have archives you can look at too. A lot of it isn't too appropriate for young people to do because of content, but a lot of is...check it out. Good luck!!!

Since it is a competition, I would see what sort of monologues have won in past years. Doing a monologue about finding a monologue might be funny, but they might not approve of original monologues. Also the question of length is important as well. Look at past years' winners and see what type of monologues the judges have favored and if you can tell where those monologues came from. That's your best bet!

aah, no Shakespeare???? dude, Shakespeare is what I LIVE for! I work at a Shakespeare theater!!!

Just in case....

if we shadows have offended
think but this and all is mended
that you have but slumbered here
while these visions did appear.
and this weak and idle theme
no more yielding but a dream.
gentles, do not reprehend
if you pardon we will mend.
and as I am an honest Puck
if we have unearned luck
now to 'scape the serpents tongue
we will make amends 'ere long.
else the Puck a liar call,
so good night unto you all.
give us your hands if we be friends
and we all shall restore amends.

I suggest Will Farrel's phone booth call on Anchor Man.

"I'M IN A GLASS CASE OF EMOTION!"

or how about any Sam Jackson rant off of Pulp Fiction. Keep in mind, these are just for fun.
