The dual core.

For various reasons, the core 2 duo will be faster than the higher GHz on the single core. And just so you know, a dual core 2.4GHz processor does NOT mean you have the equvalant to a 4.8GHz.

Go for the Dual core!

clock speed is determined by multiplier and front side bus (fsb).
The pentium D is older technology, has lower IPC (instruction per cycle) compared with the C2D has a lower fsb, uses more energy, and kicks more heat out
The Core 2 Duo is newer technology, higher IPC, lower heat, lower energy use, and has a higher FSB.
The only reason why the clock speed is higher in the Pentium D is it uses a higher multiplier.

I'd recommend the Core 2 Duo, because it has a higher IPC and higher fsb

Think the C2D runs at a faster FSB so is theoretically faster, and it is not 3.4Ghz x 2, its 3.4 over the 2 coves (i.e. 3.4 = 1.7GHz each core) I believe

it wont make a hill of beans difference in gaming experience ... thats almost all in the videocard the memoryspeed and the harddrive speed .. i would get the core2 simply coz its the latest but if the pentium D is way cheaper go with that ..
