Why not improve the receiving aerial?
A simple GAASFET amplifier will boost the 2Ghz signal by 30Db, which is the equivalent of a ten fold increase in signal strength.

A few (very few) wireless cards allow you to connect an external antenna system to it. For the most part, though, it is far easier to install a higher-gain antenna on the wireless router than to attach one to your laptop.

I like the modified tin can idea. Alternatively, if you buy an external USB wireless adaptor and a USB extension cable that is around 2m long you might be able to position the adaptor to get better wireless reception. You would need to switch off the internal adaptor on your laptop to avoid confusion.
