I've had to for a month now... and it's always been a really perky male betta. Now all of a sudden he's not really moving much and won't eat. What I am doing wrong? I've read a few guides, do you really think it's the water temperature like this site says?

Thanks in advanc

Water temperature or water quality would be my fisrt thoughts. Assuming you change the water and keep the tank clean, it's most likely temperature. Be sure your Betta has a fairly steady temperature some where between 75-85F.

don't bother asking people at pet stores, they really don't know anymore than people off the street because most employees are just people off the street who needed a job. .

it is most likely water temp, bettas are tropical fish. if you keep any tropical fish in colder water than it need it will slow down internally and externally just like any other cold blooded animal. because everything is slowed down it doens't need to eat as much. however, this doens't mean "yay! less money to spend on food I'll just keep him in colder water" extended exposure to the cold will shorten their lives greatly or if it's cold enough (mid to low 60's) it will kill them.

really bettas are no different that any other fish when it comes to needs to THRIVE, they're just more durable so they can SURVIVE in poor conditions. two entirely different things. you thrive in a nice home with proper food, a bathroom, and ac/heat to keep the temp right. however you could survive in an unheated closet with no toilet. that's kind of what it's like to keep a betta in a bowl or vase.

in other words if he's not in a tank that's at least 2.5gallons with a heater and small filter, get one.

It probably is the water temperature. Even though hes just a fish, hes just like you. You probably are happier in a comfortable 75degree setting rather than a freezing 35degree setting.
