Why is the Electoral College a "College"?

I think of a college of a place that charges tuition, has tests, and provide diplomas to graduates. So, why is the Electoral College a college then?

It's not, in the modern sense of the word.

In older times (1700s) included any body where people gathered knowledge and made decisions.
