When you are talking about the avocado vs the artichoke viewpoints, you are talking about an inner nature. An avocado has a huge seed in the middle which is distinct and more like other avocado seeds than it is like the fleshy exterior of an avocado. An artichoke, on the other hand, has no major distinction... one part is much like another.

Judaic and Christian traditions are definitely of the avocado persuasion. Humans have a soul and are made in the image of God, while everything else in the universe is just decoration. It is the inner soul which is important and divine, not the fleshy exterior.
