I have a Murray riding mower with a 17hp Briggs and Stratton v twin engine. When the mower is cold it will start just fine and run great for about 30 mins. After about 30 mins it will start running bad and missing. I have to pull the choke to keep it running. After the choke has been pulled it will run good for awhile but eventually it dies. Once it dies it will not start back up until it is cool. Once it cools down completely it will start back up work perfect for about 30 mins then start doing the same thing over again. I have tried changing the spark plugs, did not help. I checked them after the mower died and they do not have a lot of carbon buildup or anything. The air filter is fine also.

I am going to try cleaning the carburetor next since that seems like that would cause the choke problem but i don't understand why it starts working perfect after it cools down. Thanks for your help.

Try loosening the gas cap on it a little bit. Sometimes the valve in them starves the motor of fuel. Choking it would add that fuel and temporarily resolve the issue.

This happened on several mowers I have had, and a couple of older atv's

Yup.
Fuel cap breather vent is plugged and not allowing air into the gas tank as the fuel level drops durring operation and causes a vacuum in the fuel tank keeping the gas from getting to the carburetor.

It's not ignition related as in magneto/armature because if it were, one cylinder would misfire, not both. You may want to replace the fuel filter too. It's inline before the fuel pump.

Next time it dies unscrew the gas cap and see if you here a suction of air. Your vent on your gas cap may be plugged up and not letting air in tank therefore gas can't feed to carburator.

Before you change ANYTHING else, change the oil. I have seen this problem 100's of times. It runs until it gets hot then cuts off. Make sure to put the correct amount of oil in it also..
