I have a fairly small fish tank (fresh water) with all the filters etc.. I had 2 fish in it, but one ate the other- and i got rid of that one. So now i dont have any. After i got rid of them i noticed a very dark green turquoise something growing in it. it is completely covering the rocks and plants inside and now almost completely covering the sides of the tank..what is it? Some kind of algae im sure. It a very pretty color, but what can iuse to keep it away? It would probly help to put fish in it! But will it come back when i have fish? It grew VERY rapidly.

Odds are good it's cynobacteria and looks a lot like slimey algae. Hence the common name blue/green algae. Here's an excellent page on why you have it and how to control it.

How big is the fish tank because you are looking at tank algae that grows from fecal matter of fish or when conditions in the tank aren't correct. Clean the tank well then buy some antialgea drops, stabilize the water and by a picostomis or a fecal matter eating fish to keep the growth to a minimum.

You have your tank either near a window or have your light on to long, or you over fed your fish

1. don't put the tank near a windo, the sunlight will cause algae to grow

2. leave your light only on for 10-12 hours during the day, and turn it off for 12-14 hours at night

3. Feed your fish only as much as they will eat in a period of 3-5 min at each feeding twice a day

you can dump out your tank and clean everything with hot water, then you have to start up your tank again and start cycling it, here is a site that explains it in detail

When your ammonia and nitrite levels are at "0", and your nitrate readings start to have a reading, your tank is ready for fish

Hope that helps
Good luck

Don't worry its just algae if you get a sucker fish and the algae keeps growing you wont have to pay to buy fish food because that's all they, but if you get one and the algae stops growing you can go to the pet store and buy special algae capsules or flakes... Hope my info helps!
