Hello,

I had a great book written years ago called secret societies,
written in England and covered everthing from the Cosa Nostra to the Ku Klux Klan.

The white hooded outfits are supposed to represent the ghosts of Confederate soldiers who died for the South.
They knew that the former slaves had their African based superstitions like voodo and all so all the better to terroize them and keep them in their place.

Cheers,

Michael

There are a number of explanations given as to what it represents:

A very similar cotume was worn by Irish paramilitary groups during the period of colonial rule in Ireland. It is possible this costume was brought over to America, as Irish integration in America occurred as a result of "Jumping on the bandwagon" and assuming anti-black attitudes (Noel Ignatiev: How The irish Became White, Routledge, 1995)
The ghosts of the Confederate troops in the American Civil War.
The white represents the white race, reflecting the racist ideals of the organization.
The pointed hood also resembles that of a medieval executioner (although this was usually black, and that of grand inquisitor.)
The red cross on the white costume, and the horse resembles that of crusaders.
The costume was similar in design to those worn by the Spanish Inquisition, with the exception of the hood.
The white outfit may also be reflective of supposed Druid costume.

it is to resemble that they were white and rebeled against blacks. after the ku klux klan were banned (although they are still a group to this very day) the nra (national rifle ascoiatioin) came about and used rifles to shoot down black people. they would beat and torture them and they would also set dogs upon the black people. this was all during the freedom act of 20th century. other things that happened during this period was sit ins, the bus boycott involving rosa parks, the little rock 9, dream speech by malcolm x and march on washington.
you may want to research some of these as they were as well important during the time for black rights and equality.

beware as some people just copy and plagerise from other sources which is what is used in history but it is better to go by your owwn words rather than somebody elses.

Afro-Americans are some of the best citizens in the USA - they never rape, riot, commit murder, rob the elderly, sell drugs, do drive by shootings, murder their pregnant wives, commit incest, kidnap, solicit prostitutes, engage in racism, or drink to excess. Bad Ku Klux Klan, BAD!

They are monsters that realized they had to hid their face.
Or maybe they were ashamed to show their faces.
People who cover their face are doing things they know is wrong.
