Whoops, I guess I'm one of those spouting liberals. Heh.
I have SUCH strong feelings about this topic, even as a mother. I find it so wrong that people feel they can legislate what women can do with their lives and bodies.
First of all, for those of you that think it should be okay ONLY in cases of rape or incest - how are you going to prove rape? Not all rapes are/can be reported immediately. What if you just don't believe her, and it turns out she really was attacked? You're going to FORCE a women to carry a child that she didn't chose to create? Or, if we just let anyone get an abortion that says she was raped, then how many times over are rape accusations going to increase just so women can get out of pregnancy? It wouldn't work.
Secondly, YOU CANNOT LEGISLATE MORALITY! I am a Christian, but I know that this country was NOT founded as a Christian nation just because it was founded by Christians. It was founded as FREE nation, and our laws don't come out the Bible for that very reason! I can choose what I want for myself and speak out about how abortion is sinful all I want, but as a citizen of the U.S., I don't have the right to tell a woman that she must carry a child because I believe in a God that has said so.
I personally believe that the system in place now is close to the best we can do. The only change I might make is to put the limit at 20 weeks instead of the second trimester. If you haven't figured it out by then or made your decision, you shouldn't be allowed to take the easy way out.
The cases of women using it as "birth control" are so few and far between, mostly because of the expense. Almost NO ONE makes this decision lightly, so before you condemn someone, you need to walk a mile in their shoes. Seriously.
Lastly...adoption?! Yes, great, that'll work. The HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS if children in foster care are just our collective imagination.

Speaking as an ex-Republican, I think you are more like a Libertarian. Not quite but mostly. The problem, as I see it, is that both the main political parties have been moving to the Left for the last 80 years. Consider that President Kennedy (D) was more conservative than W Bush (R). As it stands now, the Republicans are making a mistake by being Democrat lite. Where's Reagan when we need him? You ask "is there room for a liberal/moderate republican with these views?" I think not. Because your views and opinions are somewhat to the Left of what Republicans should stand for. The way things are going, the GOP is getting dragged to the Left so what's the point of having it? Everyone might as well be Democrats. Otherwise, I mostly agree with your stands.

I makes no difference to me what other people think when it comes to abortion.
I believe in what the Bible says. It's wrong. It's not to be used as a method of birth control and unless there are health reasons for the mother that an abortion should take place then it shouldn't be done. Plain and simple.
In this day and age of adoption there are VERY few reasons that a women or girl should consider having an abortion over giving up the child for adoption. Unless you are retarded, any woman/girl old enough to conceive should know the risks of having sex...protected or not. It's that simple.

My opinion on the abortion issue was ormed by examining my own personal moral system. I don't let other people's emotions influence my feelings about any issue.
Why should you?
By the way, you just called the pro-choice movement "utter foolishness" and then, in the same sentence, implied that you are thankful there is a right to choose.
Amazing. So you agree with our point of view... yet you think it's foolish.

My views on abortion are influenced by common sense, reasonableness, and current law, not religious doctrine. I guess that makes me a 'liberal', and I am now spouting utter foolishness. 8^)

no, i make my own decisions. i believe a woman has a right to to abort her child if she wants. I just believe that a person (liberal OR conservative) should not get involved in a decision like that.

I have had this debate with people for year and my views really have not changed because my faith has not and to support abortion would be a major affront to the faith I have in God and the sanctity of innocent life.

No, I make my own decisions on issues. The only label that fits most of my viewpoints on most issues is Libertarian.
