Totally agree!
Its a form of dictatorship. If you think about it, its unbelievable that if you go out and buy a TV, you then have to buy a licence for the right to watch it! If you dont, you are taken to court, get a criminal record and a huge fine.
At the end of the day we should do what the Australians did, refuse to pay as a nation, theres no way they could take millions to court.
The BBC should make its own way, like every other TV and Radio station. What right have they got to force us, BY LAW, to pay for their existence.
Also the BBC represents a load of Guardian reading, lentil eating lefties who all live in Hampstead and Islington in London, and spend their time pontificating on how we should all lead our lives. They push their own PC political agenda at the nation through their news, documentaries, kids tv, and even sitcoms.
So basically they dont really represent that many people, but they have all the power, the medium to push their views, and the law/govornment on their side.

I seem to be in the minority here but I agree that we should have a license fee but not at the current level, if you just for a single night compare the quality of the BBC programmes to the most of what else is out there then the quality just doesn't match nor come anywhere close. The fee is way too much and that is the fault of the Fat Cats money-grabbing as much as they can. We in Britain have a unique TV service where most of the ordinary workers are dedicated to producing quality programmes unlike other countries where the only thing that matters is the ratings and income. It's an unpopular stance but it's my stance and I don't apologise for it.

No. The BBC stinks and has done for quite some time, and gets worse. Do you know some of the fee now supports CH4? Do you know it'll also be going in future to the new Farsi and Arabic BBC channels? Do you know the VAST majority of the fee goes into the shareholders and Director's pockets of the Company that runs and polices the licensing scheme? Did you know it's actually a CRIMINAL offence not to have a license and it goes on your permanent record like a rapist of murderer? There's SO MUCH about the fee, how it's run, and where the money goes that's WRONG.

I don't need a TV licence, as I don't watch TV, yet the people who collect the money on behalf of the BBC continue to send me threatening letters every month, requesting that I prove my innocence, there goes one of the basic tenets of UK law.
I have a full driving licence, don't have a car, the DVLA, don't hassle me about car tax and insurance companies don't warn me of the dangers of driving without insurance.
As for not advertising, they are constantly advertising DVDs, upcoming programmes and the Radio Times.
Have a look at http://tvlicensing.biz/ there's a copied section of a report from the BBC, that indicates that if the BBC was a subscription based service 58% of the population wouldn't subscribe.
Sorry, got on my high horse for a bit... no it's not fair!

Of course I dont think its fair! I dont think many of us do, but instead of us all standing in a united front and saying "we arent going to pay it" we all pay it and moan about it!
They say the licence is to pay for the programs that are shown on the bbc because they have no adverts, so hey, shove some adverts on there! I also think they do advertise anyway, how many items that we can purchase have you seen in the shops in their programs. Or in the soap the products on the tables, or even the music on the radios!
I agree its bloody stupid but we wont do anything about it, but perhaps its time we all stood up to this country and said NO to several things!
What do you think!?

No I don't think it's fair at all. I would be prepared to put up with commercials on BBC1 and 2 to cover the cost of running it rather than effectively being "taxed" for a channel I barely watch.
I don't give a monkeys if it represents middle England either, given that I live in Eastern Scotland. It's time we started lobbying parliament about this.

PS - Does anyone else find it unbelievable that they still make blind people buy a TV licence?

So there's the possibility of an election in October. If not, there'll be one along eventually. Why not make your view known in writing to the Independent candidate in your constituency? Tell him/her that they have your vote if they will commit publicly to working towards the abolition of this totally unjust taxation, and then stand by your decision and give them that vote.
Nothing's going to change in the UK as long as we keep bouncing back and forth between Labour and Conservative; you only have to read these forums each day to recognise the depth of some of the anger that is being generated. It's time to give some new voices a chance to prove themselves. If they don't, you kick them out next time around. Independents don't have the financial fall-back that party MP's do; they're going to want to hang onto the job once they've got it. They can only do that by continually representing YOU, rather than the faceless moneybags who bankroll the current Establishment.
Someone once said something along the lines of: "We get the government we deserve." That's ALL we will continue to get unless people are prepared to act to get the government that we NEED.
A TV is the only item in your home that you only stop paying for if you make it past 75yo. No political Party will change this; an Independent would very probably try to if it meant votes and his/her continued presence in the HOP.
MPs who stand under the umbrellas of Political Parties have proved that they do not work for their constituents; they work to appease their Party Whips. The UK's presence in Iraq, whatever your view of it, was a prime example of Whip bullying of Labour MP's who were Against. That power is retained purely because there is insufficient viable "free-of-leash" opposition. You can only change this state of affairs by CREATING that opposition in the form of Independent MP's. Enough of them could force the majors to take stock and realise that their jobs are on the line if they don't do what they're paid to do - listen to YOU and act in YOUR interests.
The TV licence could be just the fuse that leads to the powder keg...

What is fair in this world?
I is well worth the price to stop media moguls such as Murdoch running a monopoly.
BBC has sadly compromised it's independence after the Dr Kelly business were a report which was ultimately proved to be correct got the reporter sacked and costs a man's life. The Board of governors should have told the Blairina Mob to perform the physically impossible

It is most unfair and the BBC is the biggest gravy train in existence even more so than the clique in Brussels,so many so called executives get salaries in the hundreds of thousands, let there be much more accountability for what they do. Privatise it and see the heads roll.
