http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatty_Arbuckle
Roscoe Conkling Arbuckle aka Fatty Arbuckle (March 24, 1887 – June 29, 1933) was an American silent film comedian. Arbuckle is noted as one of the most popular actors of his era, but he is best remembered for a heavily publicized criminal prosecution that ended his career. Although he was acquitted by a jury with a written apology, the trial's scandal ruined the actor, who would not appear on screen again for another 10 years.

Roscoe Conkling Arbuckle (March 24, 1887–June 29, 1933) was considered one of the great comic actors of the silver screen during the silent movie era. His career was later derailed by drugs, alcohol, whores, and a pebble placed on the track by a mischievous child. In this way, Arbuckle blazed a path that would be soon followed by many other actors, rock stars, and rapsters. His trial was considered the Trial of the Century (for other Trials of the Century, see Harry Thaw, Nuremburg, O. J. Simpson, or Michael Jackson); Arbuckle was a pioneer of the entertainment genre known as the celebrity trial.

Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle began his career in Vaudeville. Arbuckle hit the big time in 1913 when he signed with Mack Sennett and became one of the Keystone Kops.
Arbuckle was heavy - he weighed somewhere between 250 and 300 pounds - and that was part of his comedy. He moved gracefully, threw pies, and humorously tumbled.
At a raucous, three-day party in 1921, a young starlet became severely ill and died four days later. Newspapers went wild with the story: popular silent-screen comedian Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle had killed Virginia Rappe with his weight while savagely raping her. Though the newspapers of the day reveled in the gory, rumored details, juries found little evidence that Arbuckle was in any way connected with her death. Even though he was acquitted, his career had been destroyed.
In later years, Arbuckle had begun a come-back, but never regained his popularity. In 1933, he suffered a fatal heart attack in his sleep. He was 46.

Roscoe Conkling Arbuckle (aka Fatty) was actual the predominant comedian of his time. He was the first actor ever to be on salary for over 1 million dollars a year.
He is now known for being involved in a scandal that ruined his career. A woman died after attending a party that he was at. He was accused of having raped her and causing injuries that resulted in her death. The trials were splashed in the newpapers and public opinion convicted him even though it was later shown that he was the victim of a blackmailer and he was cleared of all charges, his career was pretty much finished. Now he is primarily remembered for being in the center of the first celebrity media circus.
