My boyfriend bought us a brand new headboard for $100 at a thrift store. It is $1,200 at Raymour and Flanigan. I hate it, he's not in love with it, but got it because it's so cheap. We've had it for a couple of months. I would rather make a headboard from scratch. We could sell it to someone for a few hundred dollars. He's just such a pack rat that I don't know what to do. I've already got him to throw out an old ugly couch, a futon from college, and a papsan chair. I'm a minimalist, and he's a pack rat. When I organize all his junk, it's turns into a horrible mess again in a week or two. Help!!

I feel your pain.
I'm married to a pack rat. I finally convinced him to let me get rid of some stuff by not throwing it away, but by donating it to the Vietnam Vets charity. (My husband was in the marines, so this struck a chord with him.)
The vets even came to our house and took all the stuff (one couch, one bed, one set of dishes) so we didn't have to haul it to them, and they gave us a receipt to use on our taxes for a deduction! We were able to write-off $800 for charitable donations last year!

LOL, I have the exact same problem with my husband!! If you know he really doesn't care for the headboard, here's what I would do: I would make one or buy one myself and sell the ugly one without him knowing. So the new, better one will be there when he gets home. It's done and there's nothing he can do about it! "You know you like this one better, hon! Get over it!" I'm such a great wife =]

Start watching these t.v. shows together if you can:
Clean House
Clean Sweep
Mission: Organization
Also visit http://www.messies.com/.
See if you can interest him in reading any books by Don Aslett, such as "Clutter Free" or "Clutter's Last Stand." These are probably available at your local library. http://www.aslett.com/
Another very good book is "It's All Too Much: An Easy Plan for Living a Richer Life with Less Stuff" by Peter Walsh (of the t.v. show Clean Sweep).

Sell the headboard for profit and use the money to get him more organized... It's good to go through his things together and have him organize it DONATE,KEEP,TOSS and make the keep pile smaller and smaller.. .Allow him to keep cherished possesions that he may not use on a daily basis in some protective storage containers.. Things he uses organize and have him put away in the same place everyday..DONATE/TOSS are a no brainer... It's good that you have him throwing away things that are of no use to either one of you.. I've seen a pack rat in action and it's no fun.. Maybe have a garage sale and use the money for a fun weekend getaway or something fun ! I feel if you don't use it in a yr. get rid of it... Good luck

Its YOUR house. They are YOUR children living under YOUR roof. You shoulnd't need to convince them. This sounds like a TERRIBLE living situation for the poor dog. Think of what his life must be like... sitting outside all day, no human contact (I HOPE you at least have food water and shelter for the thing, otherwise its animal abuse and you could go to jail). If I were you I would just take the dog and surrender it to the animal shelter (well, if I was you this situation wouldn't be happening). Tell the kids whatever you want. Tell them the truth, or lie and say he broke his chain and ran away. The point is, teenagers should be responsible enough to help care for a dog, but if they aren't they are still living under your roof and you are the legal guardian of that poor dog.

just go buy a head board you like, and sell the other one,, he isnt going to care, he is just a cheap skate, it isnt a pack rat, he just doesnt want to spend money on useless crap like a head board, Men dont care as long as the bed holds them, you can put a bed on milk crates, cinder blocks, and a guy doesnt care,
he can have a end table for years made out of a card board box,

You have my deepest sympathy..
.It is no different at my place. Try living with a heart patient that does not have the heart to throw anything away! His latest episode involved bringing home grass clippings from work because he thought our son needed them to fill in holes in the yard...sob...(twenty bags) He will save almost anything...
Recycling is one thing but........................................
One thing he cannot stand is empty space or shelves and I just love looking at an empty shelf.
