You don't mean early Americans by the way. Only a third of Early Americans wanted a new government.

But as to your question why the Founding Fathers wanted a system of checks and balances, we have to realize their education and their current events. The lawyers making up the Constitutional Convention would have been well-versed in Latin and Greek and have read the classics and histories of those cultures. They realized the Greek democracies would fail by the tyranny of the majority into mob rule thus requiring a dictator to restore order. Likewise, the writers would have been aware of the Roman Senate ruled by the whim of emperors declared as gods. The inspiration of their time was from a popular French book writer named Roseau that advocated men were born free.

But, in the end, the writers of the U.S. Constitution considered their efforts a grand experiment and that it would fail in 50 or surely less than 100 years' time.

The founding fathers were fed up with being under the thumb of a King and they wanted to ensure that no single person or entity would have such absolute power over the people.

They designed a system that would make sure that the people always knew what their government was up to and gave them the power of the vote to have the final say in the direction of government.

That said, they envisioned a perfect government, responsive to the people, run by "public servants" that has been corrupted since. But, the system still works. We do not have a King or a dictator and, if you vote, you still have some power over the direction of government.

It's not perfect but it does work.

that is all bush has done his whole life & now mccain is bragging about being so lucky because he has gotten away with so much his whole life. He was on "the View" & I thought maybe he would say something intelligent to prove everyone wrong. He told said he was the 5th from the bottom of his class & he had a colorful life. Do we really need the kids of today having another role model like this? Yes, they have abused this power.

They wanted to prevent a king, dictator or emperor from rising to power.

The idea was to ensure the people remained in power and that no one man or branch could operate with impunity.
