Good question....
I'm Welsh, but have been living and working for the last 14years in the North west of England.
As a proud Celt myself, ad very patriotic about my country.. I too find it odd that St Georges day and other such patriotism's are not really celebrated in England. where as in Wales St Davids day might as well be a bank holiday, for all the festivities it brings. As for St Patrick's day, well now that's celebrated by more people across the world who are Irish, and those who are not.
So is it fair to say that the Celts appear to be more patriotic than the English (when the rugby and football is not on)??
For me to be patriotic is more than sporting events and such, it's about a love for your country and culture, for its history/ my roots, for our language and our politics. To be proud of who you are and where you come from.
If I'm honest I don't know how you can instill such qualities, it seems your either born/ influenced at a young age that way, or not.

Why shouldn't we be patriotic? There is nothing wrong with loving the country you are from. Sorry, not quite sure you intended the way you said "Why are the Scots so patriotic" to sound as I'm taking it. But we do have a lot to be proud of. As do all/ most countries do.
If you are English, be proud to be English. That is who you are. Whatever country you are from, you should be proud of it. As long as its not to the point of hating other countries.

I've noticed this too. Scots have more of a nationalistic pride than do the English. I don't know why. Other nationalities that have very intense national pride: Australians, Koreans, Americans, Brazilians.
Maybe because the Scots fought very hard wars to gain independence.
Countries that do not have strong nationalistic pride: China, France (this seems to be changing though), Germany.

Scots are patriotic because they are proud of their great history, they have faught and won many wars, discovered and developed new lands, discovered medicines and gave the world Scotch Whiskey, bagpipes, Nessie and deep fried Mars bars. Why wouldn't they be patriotic.?

I think if you are patriotic and English you are associated with racisim. Unfortunately thanks to the BNP, Skinheads and football fans, being English isnt something you really want to shout about.
Im Scottish but would prefer to be called British as a lot of the Scottish people just like saying they are Scottish and proud by way of meaning that they hate the English.

English are patriotic, but we get no encouragement for it. No St George's Day as a special day etc.

What you say is generally true but go to an England football game and listen to everyone singing the national anthem and it will make you proud to be English!

The English are patriotic - they're just not very clever about it!
Have you never heard football fans chanting "England 'till I die!" - very poor grasp on the English language!!
