You could hire a dry-carpet cleaning service, they are generally very good. The cleaning system is HOST, one business I recommend is Spectrum Cleaning.
If you want to do the job yourself you could hire a Karcher Wet and Dry machine and purchase some carpet shampoo from an industrial cleaning suppliers such as Aquawash. If you choose this method get advice on how to do the job properly, not saturating the carpet or bleaching it.
I guess www.yell.com would be a good starting point as you can search by service and location.

Buy 2 or 3 cans of cheap car (Instant Valet from £ shops)upholstry foam. Spray it on a manageable area , leave for 30 seconds and wipe off with clean, damp cloth. Continue until all carpet is cleaned. Any stubborn stains can be treated twice. The carpet dries really fast because there isn't a lot of water involved.

I agree with two other responders.
For spots, OxyClean is utterly amazing.
For larger areas, I have found that my Bissell Pro-Heat has done a superb job on my off-white carpet. I thought for sure it would have conked out by now, but it is still going strong after 6 years. I read that there is an updated model now. If you buy one, try to get it from a store that offers coupons, like Bed, Bath and Beyond, Linens and Things, or BestBuy. Or at Target and get their discount by signing up for their credit card. I used a 20% coupon and think I got a great deal.

Try a spot cleaner or two to scrub out the stains that you have.
I would urge you to NOT buy a rug cleaner, the household types just don't do the job. If you find that your carpet is in need of shampooing, rent a rug doctor.
I caution you to run as many fans and read the directions carefully. One of my friends tried to clean her carpets in speed time once and she ended up getting them too wet, they didn't try well and she ended up with a mold infestation and had to have all the carpet ripped out and replaced.

Yeah Rug Doctor is good if you just want it for a one off clean; you can hire one from your local DIY place like Homebase or Focus. I can't remember how much they cost (not the earth!) but you need to take like proof of address etc when you go to collect it.
It's probably worth ringing around first to see where has got them, as sometimes they only have a couple of machines so you may need to put your name down or something.

On the spots try using cheap drug store shaving cream.. Not gel. Rub the area with a brush and blot with a damp towel..It's soapy and it can be really good at removing older stains.. Also, renting a RUG DOCTOR is very affordable.. That might help as well... Good luck
