My 2003 Honda Accord has a automatic transmission problem. The car works fine in 1st, 2nd and Drive but it won't shift into the D-3 gear. If you lock it in 2nd and accelerate up to 40 MPH and then put it into Drive and let off it will slowly shift into Drive. After you are in Drive it will shift down to D-3
for passing. Does anyone know what the problem is and is it a simple fix or do I need a complete transmission rebuild?

The first thing I would recommend is that you take the car to a Honda dealer to have them check to see if the vehicle has had the recall for the transmission 2nd gear done. The 2003 Honda Accord V-6 had a recall for problems with the 2nd gear (not third as you note) that could cause debris to get into the fluid passages and cause other problems. If the recall hs not been done and there are internal problems with the transmission, chances are Honda will repair or replace the transmission for you at no charge.

if the recall has been done, you will want to have a pressure test done on the transmission. You can't know what's going on inside the transmission without the pressure test. A pressure test will tell a technician if it is a hydraulic, electrical or mechanical problem.

The transmission on that car is shifted by energizing or de-energizing electrical solenoids that either allow or block the flow of hydraulic fluid through the different passages inside the transmission. If the check engine light isn't illuminated, it is probably not an electrical problem but that doesn't mean that the passages can't be restricted by internal debris. Doing the pressure test will tell you where the problem lies.

Because of the recall, I'd recommend taking it to a Honda dealer first before you go spending money on speculation

hope that helps

Check your ATF level. Automatic transmissions need proper fluid levels to function correctly. This could be a very simple fix. You didn't mention how the trans works in R. If it's fine in every band except D3 it's probably fluid. If that doesn't work try calling your mechanic and running it by him. You have to be a little "cute" when talking to a mechanic though. They would rather you brought the car in for a check so they can get their "pound of flesh" from you. Ask them when is the soonest they could get you in. Regardless of what their answer is, tell them that's not soon enough, your headed out on vacation and you need to have it taken care of. Explain that you were planning on bringing it in as soon as you got back to have the brakes done, this will plant the seed of opportunity for them to ultimately get paid. Ask if you can speak to a technician about the problem just to rule out any quick fixes, hopefully they will help you out. Good luck.
