Why would any woman in her right mind smoke while pregnant?
for example I know a girl who is seventeen and almost nine months pregnant, and she still smokes.

it just doesn't make sense.

How do you feel about this issue

It's awful. i was watching a special on discovery channel yesterday about cigarettes and how dangerous they are. It can cause low birth weight and brain damage in newborns and unborns. It increases their chances of being premature and also of developing cancer in adult life. It's awful that women don't realize that it isn't just their body anymore when they are pregnant. taking care of yourself is number one priority because you are taking care of the baby.

Well since its not your body
you cant really do anything about it can you
its like trying to change peoples mind who are getting abortions, no matter how much you *****, its not going to change anything, so deal with it!

im almost eight months pregnant
and i smoke, i only smoke about 2-3 cigerettes a day, but i still do regardless

my baby is perfect size, his organs are all healthy and i can breathe great for carrying all this extra weight, my doctors bitched about my blood pressure being so high, so i started smoking again, and guess what it went down! i tried quiting while pregnant and it put a lot more stress on me then when i was smoking, and since the babies fine theres no need to quit, im not smoking a pack a day, i smoke like a pack a week, and i know plenty of people who smoke while pregnant, so thats my decision and i will stick with it,

Well, I smoked with my first son and he is perfectly healthy at 5 years old. Not that I'm proud of that fact...but it's not as bad as drinking, drugs, etc... Given, I do understand that not all babies are as lucky therefore I choose not to smoke during my current pregnancy.
Actually, my doctor instructed me not to quit smoking cold-turkey while I was pregnant due to the stress it could cause the baby...to stop but to make sure that I weaned off of it. Just like everything else, smoking is an addiction. Non smokers do not realize that extent of nicotene addiction and that it is not that easy to give up.
People are so quick to judge others not knowing of their situation...

i must say that the newborn has some rights. and one of these rights is that he should not be harmed in the womb. as it is proved that smoking during pregnancy is the cause for many anomalies especially in the 1st trimester, but if she is 9 months pregnant then it may harm a little less. but she should keep in mind that most of the mentaly retarded kids are born to smokers parents. and in 2005 over170000 hospital admissions of kids in UK under 5year, were of the smoker parents, especially mothers.

A lot of smokers think that the doctors and studies that have taken place in the last, oh, 50 years, don 't know what they are talking about and smoking isn't bad. I also know someone who knows it is bad but still smoked while she was pregnant with her son. People sometimes make no sense and we just have to accept it no matter how hard it is.

well smoking is a choice. there is worse things that a person can do besides smoke. smoking has not been linked to anything but low birth weight and premature birth, BUT if you cut down to 10 or under a day ur placenta has tI'me to remove toxins before they get to the baby. i am 38 weeks and my baby is perfectly healthy. he is not underweight and they do not see anything wrong with him, also if i was going to have him premature im pretty sure that would have happened before 37 weeks. so guess that kind of throws that theory out the window. plus it is more risky for you to quit while pregnant because it puts stress on the baby. and just so the person who posted a few before me I care for my daughter just fine, and I will with my son. you shouldnt judge if you dont know the person.

its very very bad for the baby and obviously herself, i think people just cant kick the habit but i make a habit of givin pregnant ppl who smoke a lot of evil looks just to rub it in a bit more that it is just not acceptable.

i think they know that people think its bad but i really dont think they have seen and felt the obvious efffects for their child as in they dont put the two together and they just think 'well its bad for me but i feel alright so it cant do that much harm' remember its an addiction which is hard to curb (not that i in anyway agree with these ppl) and also i reckon they think 'oh whats wrong with my child getn asthma realy, it just means that take a pump evry so often nothin bad' or somethin along those lines; you never realy know what goes through their minds but you know one thing, they should be told and told again, they shud b shown the effects on their child and themselves, they shud be encouraged to quit even more than normal. and i realy disagree with what your friend is doing....you should show her what people write on here about it, and show her some websites telin the facts straight.

i also cannot believe how many ppl on here support smokin and think it is OK...WAKE UP AND REALISE THAT NO IT IS VERY DANGEROUS AND THAT YOU ARE THINKN VERY SELFISHLY!!

Personally I am pregnant and I quit 4 days after I found out. Some people wait until later. I know a woman that quit in her 4th month. To me it is a personal choice and none of my business. I also don't think you should judge others, it is her body, her child, and her choice. There are a lot worse things she could be doing.

My husband's sister smoked when she was pregnant with her kids. She still smokes (her sons are 15 and 10) around them and wonders why her children have health issues. (I wouldn't doubt that their poor nutrition contributes as well.) My husband threatened to leave me if I didn't quit smoking. This was two years before I conceived. I SWORE I would never smoke when I was ready to try for a child. Not only was I not smoking when we conceived, but we conceived around the time I had been smoke free for a couple of years. Of that we are thankful.

My husband's brother's wife also smoked with at least three of her five children. My mother-in-law recently told me that my brother-in-law's wife spoke proudly of the fact that she smoked during pregnancy. I've only met her kids a few times, as she and my BIL got married last fall and she had all five kids before they even met. (Since my pregnancy my FIL and I held a private conversation regarding the stupidity of my SIL smoking and still smoking around her kids and how it's affected them.) Ugh. I don't even go into either of their homes and can barely stand to talk with them for a few minutes. They REEK of smoke. What's even worse is that my BIL has cancer and has had pneumonia a few times since the diagnosis. His immune system is down. I'm also sure that is wife smoking not only in the house but by him does not help. I feel bad becasue I like my BIL, but I won't go into their house becasue I don't want to breath that poison, especially while pregnat. (If either SIL asks me, I will straight tell them. Before, I would just make excuses. My BIL knows why I won't go in and he understands.)

My husband and I rarely eat out because most of the restaurants are smoking. When we do, we ask for a table as far away from smoking as possible. Even before the pregnancy we were that way, but now, with the baby, it's even more crucial. There have been times where I had to hold my breath while wating for the hostess or even while walking through the smoking section to get to the non-smoking section. (That doesn't make sense to me.) We're eager to move back to Ohio where we can go into any restaurant we choose and be able to breathe. (We moved to Michigan for a year so my husband could do his grad school internship. We kept our residency in Ohio, at his parents' address. I was more interested in voting for Smoke Free Ohio than for govenor. I actually don't remember for whom I voted for govenor.)

Sorry. I'm stepping off my soapbox now.

If you are against it then what is the point of posting this comment. Did you just want upset responses?
