We just bought a new american standard 13 seer air conditioner, and we always keep it set around 71, 72 and never really turn it off. it does cycle so its not continously running, but i was wondering if by runnning it a lot would it wear it out faster?

It's just bad for the environment. I usually wait until after 6PM to run mine so that so many won't be running at same time. Continuously running will wear it out faster too, but if it's new then I wouldn't let that worry you. It's generally storage time that is the most damaging to the machine components themselves. Is it a clean environment? Is it level? Running it shouldn't matter unless it's already old and needs maintenance or recharged.

Central AC actually runs more efficiently if it is set at a certain temp and allowed to maintain it all the time. The system will not actually run all the time, and it will not have to work as hard as it would if you turn it off then start it up to cool things down when it gets too hot. Leaving it on will keep the humidity and temperature at a comfortable level and only turn on for brief periods to keep things there.

If you mean that the compressor is running all the time...then it does probably need service.

Not really. They are designed for continuous operation, but all things eventually wear out - sometimes even if you don't use them a lot.

You could save money, by getting a programmable thermostat and setting it for a much warmer temperature when you're not at home - like say 80 degrees. Then have it change to a lower temp an hour or so before you come home in the evenings.

Central air is a programmable system. Set it at the temp you desire and it will maintain that temp meaning it goes on and off as it needs to. It's very efficient. We keep ours at 76 which is comfortable without requiring a parka. All things can break down or have a particular system fail but you should have years before anything happens. After 10 yrs. we had one little part that needed to be replaced. Keep your filters clean.

You could set your temp up a degree or two but it will not hurt it to run it all the time thtas what they are designed for.
Using a programmable thermostat with this unit will also save big bucks over the course of the year.

That's pretty low. We keep ours on 76-77. Will it wear out faster? perhaps. Will it cost you more money to operate? Of course.
