1. keeps fish in. 2. keeps dust out. 3. reduces evaporation. for now u can just put aluminum foil over it with some scotch tape leaving a hole for feeding etc. check out flea markets and craigslist and u will find cheap hood. good luck.

A hood is not needed in most cases. A cover or hood serves a few purposes though. One it helps prevent evaporation. Assuming you top of the tank between water changes that's not a problem. It will hold the light or protect the light from water. If you don't have, want or need a light, no problem there. It helps prevent fish from jumping. Floating plants and fish not known for jumping will help prevent this as well. It helps keep things from falling in the tank..... well.... becareful I guess lol

Nice to have, but not needed really

The hood is mainly for jumping, but also helps decrease evaporation. You can use plastic foil if you wish, as long as you can secure it on, and as long as you leave an opening for oxygen. A proper hood will save you lots of hassle though I'm sure. Lights are completely optional - fish can get their night/day cycles thorugh ambient daylight just fine (and even with a light, only keeping them on in the evening will prevent a lot of algae growth.

Yes its necessary to have a hood for two reasons:

1. It will prevent fish from jumping
2. Its good for your fish to have a night and day cycle if the hood has a light.

hhmm....I wouldn't recommend anything like foil as this to me would cut off the air supply to the fish. I have a 5 gal. tank I never have the lid on, I keep the water level a few inches below the top so the fish don't jump out (I've had this tank set up this way for years & the fish do great).

i think you could the hood is only there to keep the fish from jumping out. but what ever you do cover it because i didn't do that once and i walked into my room with a dead fish on the floor. yuck!
