The fact of the matter is that the neocons had planned to attack Iraq long before the 9-11 happened. 9-11 simply gave them an opportunity to terrify Americans with false and fictitious "National Security" fears. Fear always works, for a short while anyway!
When planning for invasion of Iraq, neocons silenced all the opposing views (by calling them unpatriotic) and only listened to people who agreed with them. As a nation, you can not undertake such an enormous task of invasion of a foreign country in an extremely hostile environment by only paying attention to your "Yes Men".
After 9-11, there was a lot of sympathy among moderate Muslims for the U.S. and the U.S. was in a great stretegic position to aggressively face the "Real Threat" posed by Al-Qaeda. However, after a minor show of force and limited resources used against Al-Qaeda, the Bush administration drifted away to Iraq, stealing much needed resources from the "Real Threat". This, not only reduced our ability to fight Al-Qaeda, it completely turned that sympathy towards America into hatred and hypocrisy, making the U.S. perceived as an arrogant bully. It was a worst strategic mistake by the U.S. that has and will continue to show its dire impacts on the U.S. image for the decades to come.
Bush has invested his entire presidential legacy on this ONE issue and since he couldn't improve Social Security or implement the Immigration reforms that he wanted to, for him it's either Iraq or nothing! So he's desperately trying to make this work, which sadly comes at the cost of lives of American soldiers and Iraq security officials and civilians. And so far, the situation seems to be getting worse by the day.
On the national level, Bush hasn't been able to accomplish anything while creating an enormous deficit for the coming generations to face. He has angered fiscal conservatives on his out of control spending habits, while the less educated and poorly informed Fox listening Republicans still continue to support him not realizing that he's taking them down with him.
Bush has nothing to lose anymore since he has lost everything he had and spent all his "political capital". However, the Republican congressional members are extremely worried about their own survival and having 2008 election as an extension of 2006, with not only easily giving the presidency but also loosing further seats in the House & Senate. Majority of Republicans are not realizing the in depth of opposition to this war among American voters and continue to live in bliss of ignorance.

I guess this also depends on whether people base their consideration of party candidates on a single issue such as the 'success in Iraq' rather than the big picture of the entire time in Iraq, the situation at home as soldiers return and DOD personal that had to go because there were not enough military trained in certain areas. I'm not a 'party' person, I pick the person I feel will best provide leadership to the country. I'm not impressed with anyone at this point, it is too early in the 'game'. Interesting article in the Washington Post concerning the lack of care provided to a DOD employee hit while riding in a Humvee in Iraq as a gunman. I blame all of Congress and the President - not just a party for this type of injustice. I don't know about 'denial' - since it's hard to get any clear picture of what's really going on in Iraq - but, certainly, when things go badly (or are at least percieved to be going badly) in Iraq it means more votes for democrats, while 'victor' might salvage the fortunes of the republicans (don't count on it, Bush I was victorious in Iraq and lost his bid for re-election).
The priority of each party does seem to be holding onto or expanding thier power in the federal government. Rather than try to figure out what's in the best interest of America, each party tries to spin the perception of events to make it look like thier agenda is what's best for America.

"I think the republicans will win because they have the better candidates...plain and simple.
You are in denial over Iraq in thinking it was a war for oil...
It wasnt . Its a war for liberty versus Islamic totalitarianism"
What????
lets take this point by point.
"I think the republicans will win because they have the better candidates...plain and simple.- actually, the leaders for your neoclown party is ruddy, a New Yorker with several diviorces, and a perchants for wearing ladies dress. Yup, he will fit in with all the nuckle draggers.
"You are in denial over Iraq in thinking it was a war for oil...
It wasnt . Its a war for liberty versus Islamic totalitarianism" - REALLY???
I seem to recall that the reason for war was Suddam refusing to let inspectors in to search for WMDS( and Suddam let them in with no limitations, but bush was not happy)
When suddam let them in unfettered, Bush reported that suddam was about to attack with a Nuclear Weapon, and had the inspectors pulled out before they were finished( and when the inspectors were leaving, they reported that the chance of any weapons was remote, as they were destroyed in the first war....
do you idiot republicans need daily schooling? It seems that you all have learning disabilities, that or you just a bunck of sick freaks that need to attack and kill on a regular basis(but not with your own hands, that would be dirty)
BTW, do you think that the next generation of high school kids want anything to do with the "DEATH PARTY"
All dems should get down and kiss the feet of GWB, for destroying the republican party in just 8 years.

Do you really think the republicans are going to loose cause they deny Iraq?! We are going to win because the democratic congress and senate has no intentions of doing anything for this country except to fight over the war, create more investigations, and criticize the president. I think it is like most republicans figured, get the democrats into congress/senate and 2008 will be ours-again!

When we win the war you commucrats will not have to find something else to run on for '08. Your party leaders have gone over there to meet with the enemy first hand. Yeah..Peloser did. Face it! Commucrats hate anything that makes America look good. It takes the spotlight off of them and on to our whole country. You commucrats delayed the start of the war and have tried to expose every technique we were using to track the terrorists. Americans know they cannot trust the safety of this country to a commucrat.

No, there's no way Republicans are going to win with more lies about the war. The American people are on to them.

it all depends on how the war goes between now and the elections
if things suddenly change in Iraq (unlikely but possible) and Osama Bin Laden would happen to be captured next August, the Bush-backing Republicans could fare well

The Republicans can't and won't win in the next election. They've gone too far and fallen too hard. They've lost the confidence of the Nation and the ear of the people. Americans are accepting the fact they were duped into this war and Americans resent being duped. Some are admitting it, some are starting to admit it and some will never admit it but beneath the facade many are seething in their shame and disgust.

Don't worry- many of them will soon change their position on Iraq as the 2008 election draws nearer (I'm talking about representatives and Senators). It is already happening, but you will see many more Republicans sway to an Iraq-withdrawal position in the coming year as they realize they have to save their seat in Congress.
