My husband is being offered a VERY nice biochem job in the UAE, and is considering taking it. I know NOTHING about the UAE, and need help with what I would expect moving there from here in the US. I have a job here, but my husband says I would not need to work there. He is Arab, and speaks the language..but I only speak English. We have two kids. Any real help, ideas, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. He has not taken the offer yet, just seriously considering it.

Hi,

surf the net and get information about the UAE as much as possible. You may be also should buy some books about the UAE. Your husband being an Arab he should tell you already about Islamic life. But anyway - the UAE is an Islamic society, but very westernized (beside the Emirate of Sharjah). You can wear what ever you want (no dress code) but showing respect to the Islamic culture you should dress moderate.

Your husband being a biochem, he will receive a very good salary package, hopefully incl. housing allowance, transportation etc. Rents in Dubai are skyrocking and to find a nice place in a nice area for a resonable price is the biggest problem when relocating in the UAE.

Of course, when your husband receives a good salary, you do not have to work. Enjoy a lot of entertaiment, the beaches and pools, the emazing shopping centers and be busy to fix your new home.

You may be want to attend a school to learn Arabic also when it is not needed. English is spoken widely. I do not know what kind of job you do have right now, but you may be want to work here after settleing down. Just in case: have your degrees translated and verified before you come here. Also your marriage certificate and the birth certificates of he kids! This makes things go much smoother and faster.

Do not worry about not getting any american products over here. You won't miss a thing. There are stores like Spinney's and Abela's which sell american products incl. pork. Also alcohol is available in the UAE.

School system is very good in the UAE. Many companies also pay for the school fees, coz they are not cheap.

With your husband's salary you also will be able to hire a maid. Labour in the UAE is very cheap.

Socializing in the UAE is very easy and you will find contacts very soon. Just be an outgoing person. Many Americans, Europeans etc are living in the UAE and the social life is just great.

UAE is a good place to work. Make sure that you get a good offer backed up by an employment contract.

The things you should consider are:
a) housing (rents are really going up - get adequate allowance from your employer)
b) Medical coverage: Get adequate coverage through your employer that includes overseas treatment for serious ailments
c) Being it an Arab country, Islam is in the forefront for guiding through in all your affairs. I have noticed people in the Gulf countries, are very religious and become more religious once they land up here though they are not fervent before
d) You could get a job easily - it all depends what type of job you are proficient in. Language is not a barrier becuase English is widely spoken and is the main line of communication

Don't worry about the language, most people here speak and understand English just as well. Our accents may take a little time getting used to. But so would be the case the other way round!

Well I'd be sad to see you go..... I know they have the Internet over there but since its on the other side of the world I think the keyboard is filled with funny characters (even worse than me) and must be used upside down.

For you ...it would be extreme culture shock ...from the west coast ... to back in time coast.
I've heard that the pay is great ....socializing is hard.

Some blog spots are below. The second one seems informative.

It is a great place to move if you have kids, it is very safe, good infrastructure, and most schools have alot of activities for students.
