During the Vietnam War, the theory went that if you lived here, you owed the country something back. So, we went to fight in Vietnam. But all the while people who lived here were avoiding paying their taxes, and people like Vice President Cheney, said they had better things to do. With what we now know, how can we paint anyone who avoided the draft, as a coward and/ or a traitor?

None.

The draft is a form of slavery. If you think people should serve the country with personal services, why the military? why not agricultural or industrial service? Real work creates wealth, wealth is good for everyone around. The military only destroys stuff and consume wealth, like the bureaucrats. If you consider that the only way to serve the country is the draft, what about those who wake up every morning to go to work? what about those who are responsible parents and educate and care for their children? Do you think they're not serving the country? Creating wealth with personal labor and preparing the next generation for the future is not serving the country? And last but not least, the US military class has not served its country since the times of the Independence. It has served the political interests of the ruling class. Today, it's the only invading army in the world (excluding border disputes) and has been since the creation of the state of Israel.

Taxes were created to support the war effort and kept to support the military and the bureaucracy in the government. It's estimated that the middle class is paying one third of its income in direct taxes and two thirds overall (industrialized countries). This means that the one creating wealth for everyone is getting one third of the pie while those who creates nothing get two thirds. Plus, the prerogative of getting as much as they want if needed or wanted. In return for all that money you get:
- Universal health care for others because you have to pay for it (you have an income, right?)
- Crappy education for your children so everyone can pass, we don't want kids out of the system (you can pay for private, you have an income, right?)
- Security forces to keep you safe. Well, not really. They're not out there to care for you, they're out there to enforce the government policies. They'll show up to clean up the mess if you get shot or to raid your house if you have a pill in there. And, they can get more money from you if you break the law. But if you're concern about your safety, you can pay for private security (you have an income, right?)
- A stable monetary system so you can do commerce. I know is not working and the dollar is going down like the Titanic. But you don't have to worry, the government is always ready to throw more of YOUR money into the problem and, eventually, they'll find a solution.

Well, there is no draft now but avoiding it sure didn't seem to hurt Clinton, who is both a coward and a traitor. And paying taxes is unconstitutional so not paying would be more patriotic than paying them. Why do individual citizens get slammed for not paying when multi-national corporations don't?

The ideals of the American revolution were argueably betrayed by both the draft (America was supposed to have volunteer militia, not conscript armies) and the income tax (the government was supposed to be funded by tarrifs and excise taxes). So it's not entirely unreasonable to say that neither is un-American - though, 'civil disobediance,' rather than tax avoidance or draft-dodging, would be the more noble course if that were one's reasoning.

they are equally unAmerican , running from the draft is running from helping your people live a good life , it is like a liberal who wants national health care but wants the rich to pay for it all . Not paying your taxes is just wrong considering all the services we get that the people take for granted . I think all that refuse to pay taxes should live in Afganistan for a year to learn a little respect and be gratefull for what they have

Since paying taxes is something we should not be doing, I guess that leaves avoiding the draft. Closing the window takes care of that problem however.

I say paying your taxes. Taxes educate your children, fund your economy...
and personally I think drafts are ridiculous as well as the wars that causes them.
