In Baseball the team that drafted the player holds his rights until the following years draft. If he does not sign, he goes back into the draft. The Royals 1st overall pick this year was a holdout from last year, Luke Hovechaer (SP).
In the NFL, I don't believe the player goes back into the draft. I thought the team held his rights.

Majority of the time they always sign before the start of the regular season. The longer these guys hold out the more money they lose. I read on NFL.com that because Calvin Johnson is still holding out that he won't be able to sign a contract for anything more than $27.5 million because the Lions have already signed other draft picks. I know some of their reasoning is that they don't want to sign to early and set a precedence for the rest of the rookie contracts. If the #5 guy signs for $25 million, then the #1-4 guys can ask for a bit more since they were picked first, but reverse that and the #1 guy signs for $15 million, well the rest of the picks likely won't get more than that. Overall these guys always sign, before regular season. Hold on to them or try trading them to someone else if it makes you nervous.

He has to sit out a year and re-enter the draft the following year. for football

baseball is different because guys get drafted out of high school and go to college. this is allowed but if they dont want to play for the team or sign for the team after college. he has to do the same as in football. sit out a year and re-enter the draft.

If a draft player doesn't sign than you're out of luck. Most players sign though, it doesn't often happen that a player isn't signed throughout the season.

They would usually be traded if another club is interested. If not signed by any team, the player has screwed himself.
