Did I already own the properties in question? If no, sure. If yes, what are the other players bringing, and do I want to risk my property to get theirs?

Ordinarily no. If it were just my friends and me absolutely not. If it were some sort of sanctioned tournament with a neutral party as banker, I *might* consider if the event were well publicized. Fifteen hundred dollars is a lot of money to bet on such a frivolous game.
