I have a Silver Eagle Scout Ring that I wear on a day-to-day basis. I just cleaned it about 2 months and when I was looking at it, I realized that the whole ring has turned black and its not just tarnish. It has gone to where I can't see any of the silver on the ring. What has happened to my ring?

Silver turns black in the presence of sulfur. Is there sulfur in the cleaning solution you used?

A quick and easy way to remove the tarnish is to wash the ring in the dishwasher. Put the ring on an aluminum pie tin or other piece of aluminum. The oxidation will electronically transfer from the silver to the aluminum. Be warned, however, that it will remove ALL the black, you will no longer have the shadow details of the ring.

If you want to polish the high points of the ring and have the recesses be black, find a product called "Semi-chrome." It is an excellent silver polish. With a soft cotton cloth, polish the ring with the Semi-chrome, then wash it with warm soapy water and buff dry.

Sterling will naturally turn black with time.
