when you feel you have done the right thing and it turns out that it wasnt in your best interests to do so, has anyone else encountered this?

I've had a few like that. Being wrong doesn't always bring about punitive consequences; you can do everything right and still lose. Doesn't seem fair - life is like that, it doesn't always work the way you want to, but how you or I deal with it is another thing...

After a few of these vagaries of life experiences, you will learn that you cannot please everybody, and then you will make a conscious decision to
1. Keep on going and decide on things using your personal judgment.
2. Follow what the majority says.
3. Follow the rule told you by your superiors even if all will hate you as a result.
4. Back off, say "screw-ya-all" and just plant a garden somewhere and sell spices for a living. LOL

yes, many times I did something, I felt like I was glad I did it.

Then the consequences just hit right back at me and make me regrets it, thinking what the f' went wrong

I always say, everytime I try to do something nice it bites me in the *ss. Why bother!
