The game itself has changed so much that across era comparisons are stupid.
Guys that changed the game tactically (not by rule) are few.
Paul Brown made the two running back offense. (Before him it was four guys in the backfield like in that 3 stooges. After PB their was a QB, a FB, and a HB but the Tail Back was gone forever.)
Joe Gibbs with Riggins and the Hogs made it just the QB and one Running Back.
Bill Walsh popularized the West coast offense. (Using short passes to set up long runs instead of vice versa.)
That is three, in no order.
(There are probably defensive geniuses I missed, but defenses are harder.)

Walsh was not only a great coach but an innovator. His west coast offense, and the many versions there of, revolutionized offense football. And look at all the head coaches currently in the NFL that were Walsh trained. I'd put him in the top 3 ever.

Nah. He broke the gentlemen's agreement the rest of the league observed about not using the wimpy, short-pass offense, which is unstoppable. It's like the NBA has about not dunking every play, which could easily be done, which would make the game incredibly dull. Walsh made "stars" out of mediocrities like Jerry Rice, Roger Craig & Joe Montana. His coaching ranks around that of Tommy Prothro.

as much as i hate the 49ers and everything about them i have to give it up for bill walsh. the west coast offense is the greatest offense ever invented--if not the most exciting. at one time in the mid 90s like 28 of 32 teams were running the west coast offense. and you can name at least a dozen coaches that were direct or indirect disciples of bill walsh.
i was sad to learn of his passing.

He was one of the greatest. Even decades after he came up with the West Coast offensive many teams still use it and are successful with it. Teams go out of their way to find coaches that learned it from him. He is somehow connected to most of the offensive coaches in the game even now.
Beau - That is probably the dumbest thing Ive ever read. Pro sports are about winning. You do something til someone stops it. You will never win a NBA game with nothing but dunks that's why everybody doesn't do it. Rice, Montana, and Craig were mediocrities? WTF are you smoking?

I would put him in the top 5. He put together one heck of a team and he was quite innovative with the West Coast offense. I mean that was a major change in offensive strategy that placed tremendous pressure on defenses. Changes like this come along once in a blue moon.

Top 5 easily, this man put together pieces of other coaches who themselves were ahead of the game, to create that west coast offense of his. (briliant)
