What happens when you put the wrong type of Oil in your car?

What happens when you put too much oil in your car?

If you have done either or both of the above how can you remedy the problem?
Thanks

If you put the wrong recommended oil in it : A) violates the warranty in the event of catastrophic engine failure. B:) The wrong viscosity i.e. 10w/30 vs. 15w/40 could cause extreme friction and clearance problems. C: some of the additives can cause chemical reactions which increase the amount of ash deposits and acid formation which in turn diminishes the integrity of the parts. i.e. - valves, rings, etc.). I know this as I was the District Sales Manager for Kendall Motor Oil for many years.

Rule 1--No oil is damaging and will ruin the engine. Putting oil in the engine--cannot make that mistake. All multigrades will work just fine. If your down a quart put whatever you have in the engine..See Rule 1.
But always use the oil grade that is recommended by the manufacturer.. Overfill is not to be done either. Always measure with the dip stick before you add oil. A little overfill is ok. But really overfilled... Drain and put the correct amount in. Save the rest... Cars are expensive--don't mess it up--OK

It depends on things, like how hot it is there, what kind of oil was it, etc.

If your car is supposed to have 10w30 and you put in 10w40, it's not a big deal. You can drive it normally and next time you take it for a change, have them put the correct stuff in. If it's something like 20w50, it's gonna be pretty heavy stuff, so won't start flowing very well until the car is good and warmed up. On the other hand, 5w30 is lighter and might be too thin for your engine.

If there's too much oil, just get underneath and drain off the excess into a pan.

What wrong kind? Did you put the wrong weight in? The wrong weight won't hurt in the summer. If you put too much in the oil oil will foam up and will not lubricate properly.
Just drain the oil and put in the correct weight (viscosity).

different types of oil are just differ from their viscosity, the higher w is for hot climates and lower is for cold climates. you can put either gas or diesel oil on your gas engine, but if you put diesel oil on it you must change your oil every 3 mos. because it turn black fast. and if you are looking for a better acceleration you should try diesel, but the disadvantage for this, is you should warm it up first, before you go. and if you put too much oil you just drain it to the oilpan, and check it again. and the advantage of too much oil is when your main and conrod bearings are slight worn out, it helps not to make it worst, id already experienced it. hope these work.

Wrong weight motor oil can over time harm the engine. It may also ruin seals.

Too much oil can ruin the oil pump and cause seals to leak.

Both can be solved quickly. Drain and refill with the right oil or drain excess oil out.

don't worry about it, it should not bother your engine since its oil your engine cant have enough of it. The worst thing that might happen is it shoot out a little from the oil cap if the oil cap is not tight enough.

its more important to use oil then what type and weight...over filling causes seals to blow out and oil to foam makes a mess caused leaks and can cause bearing to burn up. leave whatever oil u have in [unless it 2 cycle or straight 10 or baby oil.]...i have removed filter and poured out 2/3 qt it had...or just change it and start over
