I had been a member of Ebay for about a year. I was set up with PayPal for my purchases. In total, I had only made 3 purchases. My credit card statement came and I had fraudulent charges on it that were on the same day as my last Ebay purchase. They were about $3,000 in charges. I cancelled my account after that fearing that it would happen again.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone else had any problems like this? Can anyone recommend a more secure way to purchase things on line?

I haven't had that problem myself, but the first step in resolving this situation is to report the fraudulent charges to your credit card company.

There's bound to be a problem every so often with someone. You were one of the unlucky few. I have been a member of eBay since almost the beginning. It doesn't mean I like eBay or PayPal. In fact, I HATE eBay and PayPal. Their customer service sucks, and their fees are getting to be as bad as gas prices. They patrol auctions for violations and terminate many that are acceptable, yet they don't catch the true violations until people have already been scammed. That's all irrelevant here, though. :)

You did the right thing by making your purchases with a credit card. You have recourse with the credit card, but you may as well kiss your money goodbye if you get screwed using your PayPal balance.

EDIT: Why do I continue to use eBay and PayPal if I hate them so much? Everyone uses them. No other auction site even comes close to matching the success of eBay. You have to go where the potential buyers are if you're selling. You also have to go where the variety of deals are if you're buying.

ANOTHER EDIT: Mike makes an EXCELLENT point about phishing e-mails!!! Do not, I repeat DO NOT click on any links to eBay or PayPal that appear in an email or another web site. Always type the URL yourself in your web browser.

If you are using your computer for banking, credit card purchases (including PayPal which you are), sensitive information, make certain you have good protection soft installed on your computer that is kept up to date and regularly manually scanned.

Also it is extremely important that you do not save passwords on your computer for auto logins. This is a weak link in the security of your personal information. You are luck they did not steal your identity.
