Both are fine to use. But what do you call it when an alarm stops (on its own)?
"I was having a wonderful dream when the alarm WENT OFF, so a waited a while until it WENT OFF then went back to sleep."

An audio alarm sounds, a visual alarm flashes. Any alarm alerts.

When you set or arm the alarm, you turn the alarm on. When it is triggered (i.e. fire, burglar, or 6:00 a.m.), it goes off.
However, the noise (or music or lights) come on when the alarm goes off. So, you can turn off the alarm after it goes off, which may then turn it on again. Get it?

Hopefully for the sake of the hearer, it does both.
When it sounds, if comes on. When it stops it goes off.
Modern day slang could mean that when it goes off, it sounds. Technically, however, going off is to cease alarming.
