Isn't "Experience" just a long list of debts that need to be paid once the new president reaches office? It’s not like anyone has experience being the PotUS.

As Terry Pratchett says, "Experience is something we learn just after it would have been useful."

Having experience can be a big help. Recognizing things is a lot faster and more accurate than figuring them out. But it's useless if you don't learn from it.

The real value to having an experienced leader is that there's a track record to check up on. What mistakes is he prone to make? What biases affect his judgement on certain issues? Does he repeat mistakes? Is he too chummy with certain folks? Does he piss people off gratuitously?

Knowing those things makes it easier to pick a good candidate and to know when he needs public pressure to make good decisions.

Experience is a good thing to have.. but it's not the end all be all.. I'd take a great leader with little experience over an bad leader with lots of experience any day of the week.

No, but similar experience is useful.

A governor has experience making executive decisions, implementing laws, negotiating with the legislature....

A Senator or member of Congress has experience working the politics of DC, and how federal laws and systems work...

Both are better than having neither.

Well, I guess it depends on what kind of experience you're talking about.

Now, when talking about foreign/international experience, we're seeing now just how a lack of it (aka 'W') can be detrimental to our country.

An inexperienced individual is more likely to make a mistake. That's what good experience is, it's wisdom to make the best choices.
