Within Phoenix, there are several mountain reserves that are beautiful to either bike, run or walk. You would have to tackle that type of exercise at about 4:30am in the summer. Otherwise you will probably be airvaced to the nearest hospital for dehydration or heat stroke.
But as for the nature stuff, you have the Superstition Mountains and Usery Pass in the East Valley. The White Tanks and Estrella Mountain in the West Valley. South Mountain and Papago Park kind of in the middle of Phoenix. If you want to travel to some lakes, there is Lake Pleasant that is northwest of Phoenix or Saguaro and Canyon Lakes northeast of Phoenix.

If you are going to Phoenix during this time of the year it's probably too hot to advise much outdoor activity, such as hiking. Every year the fire dept has to search the mountains for tourists that aren't used to the heat in Phoenix and didn't bring enough water, etc.
Also, Phoenix is a major city, so unless you are planning to head up to Williams, Page, etc you are not going to find any canyons to tour. There are some great clubs, restaurants, dancing, museums and everything else you can find in a metropolitan area. Have fun!

the will be no caynon tours in phoenix. it's just a big city. no caynons, although there are canyons in other areas. Page, Tuson... also the GRAND CAYNON is about two hours away. You can go down the salt like river, thats about an hour away (it's really fun, you just drift in a tube down the river). There are some nice museums and art displays, you might want to check those out too.

The botanical gardens is a really neat place to visit(if you appreciate nature). The Phoenix Zoo isn't bad, but I have heard the Wild Life Zoo in Avondale is really cool . There are all sorts of places you can go hiking. If you take a trip up north to Sedona there are jeep tours.

Camelback Mountain has a nice hiking trail. Very scenic. And several companies in the area offer jeep rides in the desert.
This time of the year the heat is of course very oppressive—in fact can be dangerous to be out for even short periods in the city, much less the desert.
If the time. Drive over to Tombstone. Nice and interesting historic “wild west town”

Just outside of Phoenix, I'd recommend Montezuma Castle, Montezuma Well and Tuzigoot. Those are some ruins with interesting history, but they look so freakin' cool! If you want to go south of Tucson, Kartchner Caverns are pretty amazing as well.

Well, if you take the US 60 (Superstition Freeway) it will lead you up toward Apache Junction!!! There are some pretty lakes and camping up that way in the mountains. You could also drive through the mountains from Apache Junction north to Sedona and thats a really pretty ride. Have fun!!!!!!!!
