OK hang in there. i have done a risk assessment course. (am a nurse) I obtained a certificate in risk assessment.
This is the definition
Risk Assessment is a pro-active process for assessing a risk involved in a specific process or activity.
Hazard = something with the potential to cause harm.
Risk = the liklihood that a hazard will actually cause harm.
There are two types of risk assessment.
1) Quantitative = which produces an objective probability estimate based upon known risk information applied to the circumstances which are being considered.
2) Qualitative = a subjective assessment which is based on personal judgement backed up by general data on risk.

We do it all the time here at my work. Its essential and is not a lot of b.... Yes u need to fill a form that will guide u, for a specific task u do, eg changing the wheel of a car, in order to discover the dangers about that process. U multiply the severity by the likelihood to get the risk. If the risk is high u develope a process to reduse it. This can include, trained staff, procedures to follow, personal protective equipment(PPE), interlocks, special tools. Whwn u do all this then the risk minimises lets say below 10. Take this seriously because if an accident occurs then u may find yourself involved legally.

The Health & Safety Executive website would be a good place to start. They have a pdf document that you can download that is 'five steps to risk assessment'. There website is www.hse.gov.uk, once you open the website type risk assessment in there search bar at the top right of the page.

So what is the question... I am sure it is to cover you against possible legislation if an accident occurred while you were involved with their care, also covers your employers.. Nothing really to do with the health or care of the elderly people is it.They might be prevented from doing something they like because of some theoretical risk.. A lot of these restrictions limit the extent to which the elderly can live out the remaining years of their life peacefully and doing the things they want to.

Risk assessment , is going around your place of work , looking for problems that might be there.
Such as are the signs to the fire exit clearly visable , are boxes stacked safely , things like that
The best way to do a assessment is to walk around and look for possable hazzards , and make a note of such things that you think might cause danger within the work place
