That really depends on the cause of the wound. If it's from physical damage, I personally would only be sure the fish has plenty of clean water (loads of water changes) and watch it carefully for infection or fungus.

Adding some salt tot he tank would be a good idea as well, about 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons is effective against many of the fungi that could cause a problem. Less will be of no benefit. For this use, avoid iodized salt, I like kosher salt because it is pure and cheap.

If this wound is from a ulcer or infection, you could be dealing with a very serious problem that could also be contagious to humans. If the wound is from a sore, treat the tank with a strong and effective antibiotic such as Furanase or Cipro for at least 2 weeks and treat the water as if it's contagious. Don;t allow the water to touch an open wound or sore on your body, get in your mouth or in your eyes. Gloves when working with the tank would be a very good idea as well. Odds are very strong it's not contagious, but why risk it?

If you have additional questions about this feel free to email me.

For wounds on goldfish I recommend you use Melafix it is really good for healing damaged fins, ulcers and open wounds. This wound could heal on its own, but you have to have good clean water in order for it to heal because there is a chance it could get infected. Melafix will help the wound heal faster and it should keep it from getting infected.

The water conditioner you put in the water usually says that it will help heal wounds. So just check yours. :)

Well, there are disease specific medications, but you should know which disease you are treating for before using these because if you choose the wrong medication, it might not work at all. Salt may not be as aggressive for certain diseases, but it is a very good all around medication for treatment of stress, diseases, etc. You can't use table salt, that is, iodized salt. You need to purchase aquarium salt, rock salt, kosher salt, etc. Anything that does not say that it has been iodized. The dosage is 1 tsp per 5 gallons of water. Pre-dissolve in a cup of water and then slowly add to the tank water, mixing thoroughly. Treatment can take a long time, so patience and diligence is required. I might suggest reading up on fish diseases so that you can identify and learn how to treat them. It sure makes things easier when our little goldies get sick! Good luck!

I guess a Band-Aid is out of the question but I'd bet Mother Nature will take care of it. One way or another.
