...what the **** happened?
In fact: no, don't tell me. I think the explanation might hurt my brain.
Can someone just tell me what genre it was: action, romance, detective thriller...?
I've watched it 18 times now and every single damn time I'm completely lost within 27th minutes.

Okay, I'll attempt it..
Okay, Donnie is given a chance to save himself from HIS world ending (by the spirit of his brother's boyfriend in a bunny suit), withouth really being told why.. So, He lives goes on lives an interesting life, BUT, his girlfriend is killed... as WELL as Frank (the sisters boyfriend).. He decides that he'd rather die than be responsible for all of that.. (on top of some issues with feeling bad for making his parents suffer with his condition).. He thinks that it will make the world a better place. That's the nutshell, taking out all the answers about time travel and worm holes.. and alternate destiny.. Basically the answer WIth them includes the thought that by acting on the warning he avoided his own destiny, which altered other peoples as well... and so he decides to put destiny BACK the way it was.. changing destiny made him more sensitive to the worm hole, destiny time travel scenario.. he was able to see things he'd never see otherwise..

well frank the guy in the rabbit suit was foretelling the end of the world as in donnies world. Donnie discovers how to time travel and sacrifices himself so he does not cause the pain and suffering that he caused when he was alive. As in his girlfriend dying, flooding the school, and such like.
The genre is not too clear really its an artsy type film.

I have absolutely no idea.
I watched it a few years back and thought I quite enjoyed it, but with hindsight, I am not really sure why, as it was as clear as mud.
Films that do not make any apparent sense to 99.99% do tend to be jumped all over and pseudo-analysed by pretentious media A-level students and undergraduates - consider some of David Lynch's offerings.
However, that should not be an excuse not to enjoy them - sometimes maybe they don't actually have a hidden or abstract meaning at all - maybe they just actually don't make any sense.

18 times? Okay...?
Its none of the above mentioned genres, it's more of an 'alternative, art, drama, phycholical movie' I can't remember the ending, but doesn't Jake die...
I'm anoyed now, I remember liking the film and wanted to answer this question but can't remember enough to give a comprehensive answer... I'm just rambling now... Sorry... I'll get back to you...

Go on the website of the film (donniedarko.com or something like that)...
If you think the film was weird the website is even worse, but when you've worked your way through it suddenly everything becomes clear, and you actually know exactly what happened.
The trouble is, it's still impossible to describe it to your mates without sounding like an idiot.
