If the Democrats win, Richard Holbrooke would probably be the first choice of many candidates especially Clinton.
If the Republicans win, I would suspect they would go with someone with little ties to the current administration to get a fresh start. If current trends continue, Giuliani will likely be the Republican nominee so its very possible he would appoint someone from the New York area.

That pretty much depends on who wins the election.
But, I'd like to see the new President appoint the meanest, Jewish Feminist Biatch we can find. Just so she can tell the Oil Sheikhs to fight their own battles if they don't like it. And to show the World that we will maintain our own standards of Morality and not those of Arab Fundies.
She'd also be able to tear a new orifice for anyone who accused her of being anti-semitic for taking a more US interest oriented approach to Israel.
