It is entirely up to the couple.
I do not think it matters either way. Eventually, the wedding & rings will be each other's debt.

My dad has an engagement ring, and that was way before the age of equality! Now he wears it on his right hand ring finger. It's kind of cool. It's not a diamond or a band or anything... it's like a gold nugget ring they had specially made.

Sure, it works and people do it...but you can't say it based on the "age of equality" because we are still by no means equal (men and women). We might be more fair, but we will never be equal, especially when it comes to romance and love...most women want the romantic proposal with the pretty ring which isn't putting them as equals, but more traditional.

They could, but unfortunatly, a lot of us are so old fashioned that we dream of the man we love putting a diamond on our finger. Ever since we were little girls. Also I think for a lot of guys it would fel weird. What would your friends say? Society has a big impact on the things we do. People might say you are cheap, or not a real man, or that she is the man in the relationship...can you handle all that? Her family also would not agree most likely.
My compromise is I got a beautiful ring, but I don't want a cinderella wedding, so we are not going to spend much on it at all. Had I wanted a big wedding, I wouldnt have accepted such an expensive ring.

The person who is doing the asking should buy the engagement ring (if engagement rings are how they want to go).

A lot of women do pay for the guy's wedding ring...whomever does the proposing should have a ring to present to their partner (if they are choosing to go with a traditional symbol).
Typically men don't get engagement rings (just a wedding ring), but that could change. No reason why they can't...

Many men don't wear rings so it would be pointless. And who on earth actually spends two months salary on an engagement ring, outside of commercials and Hollywood?

I think that a couple should do whatever they decide to do. Guess I still am a bit old fashion and believe that the man should buy the woman an engagement ring.

I guess if he wants to wear a diamond engagement ring. If he doesn't want the diamond engagement ring, ask him if he is going to wear a engagment ring and wedding ring after the wedding.

In the end what is yours is mine and mine is yours, then it doesn't matter. It is still just a symbol. I think everyone has the right to choose the traditions they like.
That's if you think an engagement ring is a conditional gift.
My wife bought me a designer watch.

Men don't care about engagement rings.
And just because some women want "equality" doesn't mean we don't value some of the things that are considered "traditional" in our society.
