The best possible solution would be to figure out the root cause for the deterioration. Many conditions can have the effect you described in your question. (Such as Addison's Disease--a disease of the adrenal glands, Arthritis, Thyroid problems, auto-immune conditions, etc. etc.).
You should work with a doctor and push them to keep investigating until they figure out a cause--there is always a cause. They might not figure it out on the first try (or the first 100 tries), but it's there. If you figure out the cause--you can better treat it.
In the meantime, try a vitamin supplement called MSM. It's INCREDIBLY effective at relieving joint and back pain. Mayo Clinic has done a variety of studies on its effectiveness and have found that it can be more effective than pain medication.
If you want to go the OTC pain reliever route until the MSM kicks in (which can take anywhere between 1-6 weeks), try Advil. They generally recommend that for inflammation and pain in the joints is generally due to inflammation.
Another option that you may want to consider is to eliminate dairy from your diet--dairy is a HUGE cause of inflammation. Replace it with soy/soymilk, etc.
Best of luck!

Evening, Lois. If the circumstance is so bad the body is deteriorating they definitely need a doctor & maybe even pain management.
But for temporary over the counter pain help I swear by Excederin PM. They also have an aspirin free brand if there is a sensitivity to aspirin or fear of thinning the blood.
I normally use just about anything generic in everything. Very few things I consider worth the name brand price. But when I'm in real pain & can't get to a dr. I won't buy the generic version of this. I tried one, once & it wasn't the same. Not even close. Though I rarely use over the counter pain medications when Ex. PM goes on sale I stock up.
It not only eases the pain but helps you sleep. My hubby uses it for his arthritis when his prescription medication isn't helping & abcess gums. I use it for pain from just about anything. I use the reg. Excedrin when I don't need sleep.
After the birth of my second child I was having such excruciating pain they gave me tylenol 3 and barely notice any difference. Then on the 3rd day they gave me the new mommy freebies & I saw the reg. excedrin in there. Though I was told aspirin was dangerous I didn't care it hurt so much. W/i about 10 mins. the pain eased. By the time a half hour had passed I could still feel the pressure from the after birth contractions but no pain AT ALL.
If this doesn't work then your only hope is some strong prescription meds.

The best thing would be to go see a doctor and have them write a prescription. There are several meds that work well for not only pain, but to ease the discomfort. Skelaxin is a muscle relaxer that does the trick. For more serious conditions, Morphine can be prescribed. For in between pain, there are things like Tylenol 3 (Tylenol with codeine) and other such meds. Check with your doctor.

It sounds like you need to go see your doctor to determine what is causing your pain. Then he can prescribe the appropriate treatment for you. Unfortunately, is the over the counter stuff doesn't help, then you need something stronger that is only given out by prescription.
