I would say diesel.
Hybrids, such as the Toyota Prius, make great claims as to fuel efficiency. However, I believe many owners report poor fuel economy. This is because, when driven out of town on the open road, at higher speeds, the electric motor runs out of sufficient juice, so the petrol engine takes over.
Hybrid manufacturers claims of better environmental credentials may be bogus, too. What about the manufacture and eventual disposal of the batteries? Mmmm.
In my experience, diesels consistently give good mileage, plus they are relaxing to drive because greater torque lower in the rev range means less gear changing. They also last much longer than petrol, because diesel acts as a lubricant and the engine block is tougher because of increased compression ratios.

I doubt you'll get a decent hybrid for £5k at the moment, but the question is otherwise quite a complex one. If by economical you mean the maximum mpg, then the answer currently would be a small engined diesel (VW Lupo diesel will give 70mpg). But, think about how you'd spend the money if you bought a small engined but older diesel? If you get a car for £1k, you've got £4k left over to buy fuel. At roughly 4000 litres of 'free' fuel, that's a lot more miles for your money! But then you've got to take servicing/MOT/tax costs in to account as well...

We have a diesel Jetta; we really like it. We get really good, consistent fuel economy on the highway and city streets. Be sure to do your research at something like caranddriver.com - I've read that hybrids aren't always as economical as claimed. There are so many variables that can affect hybrid fuel economy. But with diesel, your initial investment will be less.

I don't think you'll get a hybrid for £5000...
You can get a good quality second hand diesel and it will take you for miles.
Ask a local mechanic or a dealer how much a full service would cost and subtract that from your 5000, then spend the balance on the car. You're probably looking at £4400, realistically.

Go Diesel over the hybrid gas. They are going to start manufacturing Diesel Hybrids, and when these comes out it should be nice.
However a choice between a Diesel vs Gasoline Hybrid, go diesel. The engine is much easier to repair or have worked on. You don't need a specialist. There are fewer parts to break down. Diesel engines have proven reliabilitiy, and typically are very well built.

If your commuting is mostly stop and go, the hybrid will give you the best fuel economy, however, on motorways or highways, the Diesel engine will be more efficient, while the hybrid will be almost as economical as their gas only counterparts.
The diesel vehicle will be less expensive when buying it, compared to the hybrid.

It all depends on your mileage and how long it will take you to recover the costs on each model in maintenance and fuel and the outright cost to buy
If you are doing lower mileage a petrol car may work out cheaper.

Your niece is your niece, not your daughter. it is your brother's criminal and ethical accountability, suitable, privilage, and burdan to improve his daughter. properly intentioned or not, If i'm to take this occasion at face fee, your option to grant this present has shown disrespect to the interest he's making an attempt to do as a father. a modern-day of affection or not, if it is going rapidly against what a determine is making an attempt to end for his newborn's wellbeing as he sees it, then you definately are out of line. What you have got accomplished greater effective, is talk on your brother formerly and ask if this replaced into an suitable present to your niece, and then in all hazard negotiated your case. In then end regardless of the indisputable fact that, you will possibly nevertheless be obligated to know your brother's needs interior the subject. i don't know what your or your brother's socio-economic statuses are, yet except you're of very comparable greater end economic earning, the cost of this present might upload a tension with the aid of itself. might he fret approximately you overextending your self? might you provoke jealousy in him that he could not grant for his very own daughter as properly? might he be indignant at you for flaunting your greater suitable fulfillment as he might see it? And is it plausible you're compensating for a feeling of jealousy or inadequacy your self with the aid of choosing this combat including your brother? Is he older? Is he the 'sought after' brother?
