i am a family doctor and i bring the book to read during the few breaks and also the lunch break. It is a big room, so most of the other doctors read scientific magazines (Scientific american, discovery, etc), and then i bring the 7th hp book.

i get ocassional stares/glances, it is like my social status is going down. i just glance at them "back." So, is it okay to read the hp book even in the workplace (medical field).

thank you

I would read what I want to read and forget the others. The books, while meant for children, have attracted many adults, too. I was one of those adults who sneered at other adults reading them. Then I read the first one and got addicted! I immediately read the second and watching HP2 and then went and got all the rest of the books and read them.
I think alot of people see these books as "being against God" and that is where the real problem lies. My family, being fanatical Christians, do not see the appeal and how someone could read the books or watch the movies.
I'm a Christian and I don't see anything wrong with the books or movies, they are after all for entertainment. These same Christians pointing fingers at HP are watching Star Wars, LOTR, and Chronicles of Narnia, all having magic of some sort, and yet HP is evil! Ignore these narrow minded people!

I don't think there's anything wrong with it at all. It's a great book and possibly the most anticipated in decades. How could they not read it is what I want to know!!! You'll probably finish it really soon and not have to deal with anyone else looking at you weird until Rowling writes something else! However, if you really feel that it could affect your status or how people deal with/see you at the workplace, I would say you might want to not read it there. If people start treating you different, that might be a clue that something is going on. But if it is just a few glances during lunch, doesn't sound like long-lasting harm. Enjoy the book!

No there is nothing wrong with reading the Harry Potter books as an adult of any profession. My daughter got me interested about 4 years ago. We have fought over books and recently had to buy 3 copies of HP #7 just so me, my husband, and my daughter could all read it without fighting or someone else ruining the story for us. My husband took the book to work with him for the 3 days it took him to read it. I know he got a lot of flack for reading HP at the job site.

I'm a paralegal; I've read them all. My lawyer boyfriend has read a few of them. Our advertising exec has read them. My dermatologist and I had a chat about which one was the best. My friend's husband, an employee at the DMV, has read them all more than once.

"Harry Potter" is one of those series that appeals to both adults and children for very different reasons, but it has the ability to bring many generations together for discussion. It's too bad there aren't more books like that!

Nothing wrong with it at all. In fact, since you have a family practice, it might be an asset. Since you've read the HP books, you'll probably have a much easier time connecting with your child patients than your stuffed-shirt colleagues who sneer at you over their Scientific American, Discovery, NEJM, or whatever. :-)

As far as I'm concerned, you can read any book appropriate for an adult. I think Harry Potter is ok to read...my 47 year old mother reads them.
