When I was in school I remember they were trying to teach us the standard units of measure at the same time as the new Metric system. Then all of a sudden they announced no bother they were not going to the Metric system. What was behind the decision to switch and then not to?

The reason was that there are some civil companies that are already used to using the imperial system vs the metric system. The conversion would be complex and would cause too many problems. The decision TO switch to the metric system is simple - it's convenient. The metric system is very easy to use and almost the entire world uses it.

Conversion cost of machinery.
Seems moot since much of our machinery is imported and manufactured on the metric system.
Mechanics need two sets of tools nowadays.

Stubborness. Most people know both now anyways. And us chemists get stuck converting the numbers for anyone who can't.
