(-5^2) = -25
(-5)^2 = 25

when the negative number is not in parenthesis, it's like saying - (5^2) since you square the 5 first, then apply the negative.

Use order of operations on this one: PEDMAS
(1)Parenthesis
(2)Exponents
(3)Division / Multiplication
(4)Addition / Subtraction
-6 - 4(2 - 2^3)
-6 - 4(2 - 8)
-6 - 4(-6)
-6 - (-24)
-6 + 24 = 18

(-5^2) = -25

(-5)^2 = 25

-6 - 4(2 - 2^3) = -6 - 4(2 - 8) = -6 - 4(-6) = -6 + 24 = 18

first two are equivalent, and = 25. the square of a negative number is positive. But if by the first you mean -(5^2), then it = -25.

I'm assuming the last one is -6 - 4 x (2 - 2^3), which is
-6 - 8 + 4x8 = 18. [2^3 = 8 = 2 x 2 x 2]

(-5^2) = (-5*5) = -25

(-5)^2 = (-5)(-5) = 25

-6 - 4(2 - 2^3)

= -6 -4(2 - 8)
= -6 -4(-6)
= -6 + 24
= 18

sure.

x^2 = x*x
x^3 = x*x*x
x^4 = x*x*x*x

Same for negative numbers:
(-x)^2 = (-x)*(-x) = x^2
(-x)^3 = (-x)*(-x)*(-x) = -x^3

In the case of negative numbers, if the exponent (the 2 or the 3, etc) is odd then the final number will be odd.

And I think you get the idea.

-5^2 = -5*5 = -25
(-5)^2 = (-5)*(-5) = 25
-6 - 4( 2 - 2^3) = -6 - 4(2 - 2*2*2) = -6 - 4(2 - 8) = -6 - 4(-6) = 18

OK?

(-5^2)

we have,

(-5 * -5)
which will account for +25 as (-)*(-) = + ]

(-5)^2

Here, we multiply term (-5) two times..

(-5) * (-5)
which will again result in 25..

-6 -4(2- 2^3)

first solve the 2 ^3.. it means that you have to multiply 2 three times.. means 2 * 2 * 2 ... which will account for 8

so,
-6 -4(2 - 8)

Now, -6 -4(-6)

multiplying -4 with -6,

-6 + 24

and by addition/substraction, we get,

18
